Directions
Yamagata City, situated on the aluvial plain of the Mamigasaki River, is a beautiful former castle town with Mt.Zao on the east and Mt.Gassan and the Asahi Mountain Range on the West. The municipal government was established in 1889. The city is now the economic and cultural center of Yamagata Prefecture, with an area of 382km squared and a population of about 240,000. In addition to Mt.Zao and Yadera, which are well known throughout Japan, there are many other scenic spots and recreational facilities such as Mt.Omoshiroyama, Nishi-Zao Highlands, the village of legend, Higashizawa, and kenmin-no-Mori, which means woods for people of the prefecture, in the midst of such small lakes as Onuma, Arenuma and others.
